An Open Letter To My Child

My child,

The English language lacks sufficient amount of representative adjectives, words and phrases to express just how lucky I am to have you. As we grow together so does my excitement at the milestones you reach, as I am petrified in equal measure by this journey we take together, I realize the older you get, the more you will interact with the world and the fear of what it holds in store for you.

See, my child this world can be both a beautiful and horrid place. It’s encrusted with such amazing things and people as it is laced and layered by equally evil things and people. I am certain you will experience all these in sprinkles and dashes and other times they’ll unfold in your life like a whirlwind. And when this happens, my child, please remember to be a beacon of kindness, truth, patience, peace. Don’t allow yourself to be swallowed by hate or consumed by grudges. It is not worth investing your emotions and effort, it just wastes your time whereas there’s so much more in store for you, the magnificence of the world to experience, feel, touch, love and enjoy.

Whenever I look at you and see your vast curiousity, I silently hope against all hopes that you never lose that quality,life is full of marvel, it should spark constant curiousity to discover and rediscover yourself, motivate and inspire you, try out new things, innovate, visit new places, experience a different people and cultures, child, my child, when I look into your probing eyes I see more universe in them than midnight has stars to fill the sky; Go explore!

Tell you what, this life is fleeting, so never settle for the ordinary, go for the epic, each moment lived now should be a moment you should look back at fondly. I believe in the person you are and I see all you have to offer the world. Your future, star-spangled bright and beautiful as is your soul. Treat people as you’d wish to be treated. Treat the janitor with the much respect you would accord a CEO of a multi-billion organization. Treat women as you’d treat your mother which I hope is with love, respect they deserve, share your knowledge, material things, remember a candle does not go off by lighting other candles.

My beloved, you’ll be hit by storms and drowned by waves, you will experience brokenness more times that you can keep count yet, still, be a person of strength, hold your own, your character, your métier. Your battle wounds will represent your courageousness and defeat will submit to you as you’re daring. Be an example to many who cross your path, and reside in each and everyone of us. Do not allow the world to swallow you, you’re an old soul with young eyes, a vintage heart and a beautiful mind.

May these 5 tenets be your guide as you traverse this world;

  1. Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.
  2. Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective not the truth.
  3. The richest wealth is Wisdom. The strongest weapon is Patience. The best security is Faith. The greatest tonic is Laughter and surprisingly all are Free.
  4. Trust the wait. Embrace the uncertainty. Enjoy the beauty of becoming.
  5. There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe nor politic, nor popular,but must take it because conscience tells you it’s right.

My sun, my son; my daughter, my gem, GO, AWAKEN!
